Approximate Bayesian Computation Phylogeography of montane grasshoppers

چکیده

Lacey Knowles studied grasshoppers in the genus Melanopus. She collected 1275bp of DNA sequence data from cytochrome oxidase I (COI) from 124 individuals of M. oregonensis and two outgroup speices. The specimens were collected from 15 “sky-island” sites in the northern Rocky Mountains (see Figure 1; [5]). Two alternative hypotheses had been proposed to describe the evolutionary relationships among these grasshoppers (refer to Figure 2 for a pictorial representation):

Coalescent approaches to phylogeography and approximate Bayesian Computation

Last time we saw an early example of using coalescent theory to distinguish between two scenarios describing the history of populations. In the example we considered, Knowles [9] compared two scenarios, the “widespread ancestor” and the “multiple glacial refugia” scenarios. To make the comparison she simulated data under the “widespread ancestor” hypothesis, collected the samples into a multipl...

Assessing the phylogeographic history of the montane caddisfly Thremma gallicum using mitochondrial and restriction-site-associated DNA (RAD) markers

Repeated Quaternary glaciations have significantly shaped the present distribution and diversity of several European species in aquatic and terrestrial habitats. To study the phylogeography of freshwater invertebrates, patterns of intraspecific variation have been examined primarily using mitochondrial DNA markers that may yield results unrepresentative of the true species history. Here, popula...

The Phylogeographic History of the New World Screwworm Fly, Inferred by Approximate Bayesian Computation Analysis

Insect pest phylogeography might be shaped both by biogeographic events and by human influence. Here, we conducted an approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) analysis to investigate the phylogeography of the New World screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, with the aim of understanding its population history and its order and time of divergence. Our ABC analysis supports that populations spread...

Statistical hypothesis testing in intraspecific phylogeography: nested clade phylogeographical analysis vs. approximate Bayesian computation.

Nested clade phylogeographical analysis (NCPA) and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC) have been used to test phylogeographical hypotheses. Multilocus NCPA tests null hypotheses, whereas ABC discriminates among a finite set of alternatives. The interpretive criteria of NCPA are explicit and allow complex models to be built from simple components. The interpretive criteria of ABC are ad hoc a...

A species assemblage approach to comparative phylogeography of birds in southern Australia

We present a novel approach to investigating the divergence history of biomes and their component species using single-locus data prior to investing in multilocus data. We use coalescent-based hierarchical approximate Bayesian computation (HABC) methods (MsBayes) to estimate the number and timing of discrete divergences across a putative barrier and to assign species to their appropriate period...
